The Sonoran
is a unique desert and is home to the most recognizable and
popular cactus in the world, the enchanting majestic saguaro.
People of all ages are fascinated and mesmerized by these
giant desert beings, especially their many interesting and
complex interrelationships with other desert life. Saguaro
cacti provide their sweet fruits to the appetite of hungry
desert animals.
They also provide lodging to a variety of birds, such as the
mystic Harris’ hawk, the spirited Gila woodpecker and
the guru like tiny elf owl. An interesting fact is the saguaro
requires other desert plants for its very survival. During
the first few enlightened years of a very long life, a young
saguaro needs the shade and protection of a nurse plant such
as the palo verde tree. With an average life span of 151 years,
a mature saguaro may grow to a towering height of 50 feet
and can weigh over 10 tons.
While most visitors to the Sonoran desert choose a leisurely
drive on one of our awesome scenic loop drives through the
Saguaro National Park, those eager for an escape from the
rigors of Tucson city life often chose to explore the park
on one of our many delightful paths of trails.
There are over 150 miles of hiking
trails, ranging from flat and easy strolls in the Sonoran
Desert, to steep and rugged hikes into the Rincon Mountains.Visitors
of every ability have a place to get out of their car and
explore the mystifying energies of the Sonoran Desert! .
Birds building nests, bees making hives, and wildflowers bursting
into bloom,
combined with our exceptional spring weather, makes March
southern Arizona’s most vibrant month. The springtime
rituals of birds, wildlife and wildflowers are most visible
in Spring as it is one of the Sonoran Desert's most fascinating
times. Visitors hoping to view the Sonoran Desert, are eager
to capture a look of hillsides covered in flowers, as they
may have seen on a variety of postcards and calendars through
out the world. Naturally they wonder, “when is the best
time to visit the Sonoran Desert?” Those infamous photos
are taken during years when rainfall, temperatures, and timing
are favorable. This happens perhaps once every ten years,
a rare occurrence. Since soils and terrain are also an important
factor, there is no way to predict any year’s bloom
for any one place.
Remember, Saguaro National Park has some flowers in bloom
virtually every month of the year and visitors can expect
to see at least three flowering seasons. However, it is impossible
to predict the timing or extent of blooming of showy desert
flowers.
